KOLKATA: The West Bengal government on Monday decided to write to the Center urging it to increase the number of IAS and IPS officers as the state administration plans to increase the number districts and this will require more such officials.

The state’s Minister of Industry, Partha Chatterjee, claimed that some neighboring states which are smaller than West Bengal have more IAS and IPS officers compared to what this state has.

The state cabinet on Monday approved a proposal to set up a group of civil servants to recruit more West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) and Police Service (WBPS) officers to run the administration more efficiently. , Chatterjee said.

“We have 23 districts and district restructuring is underway. Some smaller neighboring states with 20 to 22 districts have more IAS and IPS officers than our state has. The CM has asked the Chief Secretary to write a letter to USPC to increase the assignment of new cadres from IAS and IPS for West Bengal as we will have more districts,” he said.

The Cabinet has also decided to fill a total of 11,551 vacancies in the health department with temporary contract workers mainly for infrastructure development in urban and rural areas, Chatterjee said. There will also be recruitment for 342 vacancies for data entry operators in the food and supply departments, he added.

The industry minister said a decision was also made to allocate land for chip and semiconductor makers to the state’s Silicon Valley Hub in the city. Chatterjee said the State Cabinet also decided to provide government jobs to family members of 26 people killed by lightning strikes in Hooghly and Murshidabad districts last year.

Transport Minister Firhad Hakim said the Cabinet had decided to streamline the tariff structure for trucks used for exports. “We have noticed that the fee structure for trucks transporting goods across the border is abnormal. We have decided to streamline this,” he said.

Hakim also said that it was also decided to allow the circulation of vehicles carrying perishable goods as a priority so that exporters can avoid losses. He said the ministry will soon issue a notification in this regard.

Hakim said the State Cabinet has also approved hiring staff on a contract basis for parking lots at land ports. The state government took direct control of the car parks which fell under the respective local bodies.

He said the Department of Transportation will pay staff salaries.
