Aside from a dozen non-.com domain names that I have registered over the years, I have been strictly a .com domain investor. On my NameJet and GoDaddy auction filters, .com is the only verified extension. There may be value elsewhere, but .com domain names are the focus of my business, and I don’t see that changing.
I am not opposed to purchasing non .com domain names. It would be foolish to dismiss everything else, especially as times change. I didn’t feel like spending my money on alternative extensions when there are so many to choose from. I felt like picking the winners would be very difficult, and I don’t want to keep spending money on renewing the losers, especially when some have much higher renewal costs.
Over the years, I have mentioned my willingness to buy domains other than .com when I see the potential to make money. I wanted to see mainstream businesses using a particular extension, and I wanted to see businesses willing to spend the money to acquire non-.com domain names. After all, when I invest in a domain name, I want to be sure that an end user buyer will pay more than what I paid. I don’t want to see end users buying them just because they are cheap and available. This would indicate that making money as an investor would be difficult.
In 2014, I wrote the following:
“I would rather pay more for good names in a year or two (or more) than buying new domain names now because I can determine if they have sufficient investment value for my business by a date. later. “
It took longer than I thought at the time, but this morning I purchased two .xyz domain names through Dan.com. Together the two domain names cost less than $ 650, which is probably less than what I will spend today on .com domain name auctions. I have purchased one word .xyz domain names which I believe could be used by a wide variety of businesses around the world. I’m not going to share the names because they haven’t been transferred to me yet and because I’m not trying to generate interest in domain names. I suspect I will share the names at some point, but not here today.
I’m not advocating that others invest in .xyz domain names or any other extension. I still think it’s very risky, especially when so many people are prone to trying to hand register domain names that are pure junk.
I’m sharing this because I’ve been pretty open about my goal being .com and I wouldn’t want anyone to think I was secretly buying non .com domain names. I can buy additional .xyz domain names but still don’t have much interest elsewhere. I think .IO domain names are in demand by mainstream businesses as well, but I don’t think it would make much sense for me to drive away from them just yet as wholesale prices are usually much higher than that. that I would consider paying.
I am not changing my economic model in any way. These purchases are lottery tickets that I hope to cash at some point. I’ll probably price them high and use GoDaddy’s BIN pages.
People should definitely do their own research and not take this as some kind of investment advice. If I never sell these domain names, I’m comfortable with my loss limit on those names.
