Emergen Research: Akamai Leads DNS Market Among Fortune 500 Companies

VANCOUVER, BC, August 31, 2021 / PRNewswire / – The demand for cloud-based DNS has grown significantly in recent times and is increasing the revenue share of major players in the global Domain Name System (DNS) provider market. A few global players have outperformed the rest significantly, and the current largest player, Akamai, has a significantly larger revenue share and has nearly double the number of websites as the closest competitor. The suppliers in the last part of the list are far from the market leader and it doesn’t look like the leader will be dethroned anytime soon.

A major change in the DNS industry currently is a transition to cloud-based systems and this trend is gaining ground in the market. As the cloud computing ecosystem grows exponentially across the internet, customers will have more options to control DNS performance and improve customer experience globally. The majority of companies are switching to cloud-based DNS or adopting a hybrid DNS-Cloud configuration by separating their traffic according to the standard DNS and cloud infrastructure respectively.

Another factor driving the constant increase in the revenue share of different market players is the growing adoption of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC). DNSSEC is a new trend in the DNS industry. DNSSEC protects DNS from cyber attacks by using digital signatures for DNS data, verifying data sources, and ensuring accurate data flow over the Internet.

However, the increase in DNS server failure incidents is a key factor that is expected to lead to a reduction in the revenue share of DNS providers. Websites are quickly hosted by businesses in order to engage customers, customers, and partner organizations, and DNS plays an important role in business profits. DNS services are chosen by a company to ensure better website performance and better user experience. It is important that DNS service providers efficiently operate their DNS servers to achieve these goals. Unresponsive web pages due to DNS outages can have a substantial impact on a business’s revenue. Businesses can’t afford DNS outages, especially during seasonal sales. DNS outages also have a major negative influence on user experience and application accessibility for users.

Some key findings:

  • The primary DNS server segment is expected to represent a larger market share, as this type of server is a key part of the DNS network that manages data related to domain zones and domain names, and also plays an important role in performance of web services. Data is collected directly from local files by primary servers, while only a primary server can initiate changes to a zone’s DNS records, which can then be updated by secondary servers. Secondary servers have read-only copies of the zone file and receive data from the primary server through a zone transfer. Due to these advantages, the main server is the most widely used than the other types.
  • The Secondary DNS Servers segment is expected to account for a significantly large revenue share due to the increasing use of the Secondary DNS server as it offers various advantages over other types. A single point of failure is created when businesses depend on only one DNS server. Potential visitors will not be able to reach the desired domain if the primary server goes down or has been attacked or compromised. Using backup servers results in redundancy and reduces the risk of downtime for users. Secondary DNS servers can load balance incoming domain queries, preventing the primary server from becoming overloaded and causing denial of service. Circular DNS, which is a load balancing method that sends nearly equal amounts of traffic to all other servers, is used to achieve this, which encourages businesses to use a secondary DNS server.
  • In november 2020, Neustar, Inc. announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement with VeriSign, Inc. to acquire recursive public DNS service from Verisign. The address space for Verisign Public DNS, such as the widely used 64.6.64.6, will be transferred to Neustar and included in its robust recursive public service UltraDNS under the agreements of the acquisition. Verisign public DNS users will continue to benefit from Neustar’s service and support, and Verisign users will move to Neustar’s infrastructure. This agreement builds on Neustar’s previous acquisition of Verisign’s DDoS and DNS customers in 2018.
