DNS provider Web3 could lose its domain. The only person who can renew it is in prison

“When members of the ENS DAO community visit their eth.link website, all they will see now is an empty page with a green domain expiration notice banner at the top”, reports CoinDesk.

“It’s because the only person authorized to renew the domain, Virgil Griffith, is in the service of a 63 months in jail for helping North Koreans use cryptocurrencies to evade sanctions and was unable to renew the domain from jail.”
According to a to remark Domain registrar GoDaddy posted on its website Friday evening that eth.link expired on July 26 and is expected to return to a domain registry on September 5, where it will be up for grabs for anyone able to pick it up.

The ENS DAO is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that governs the Ethereum Name Service protocol, a Web3 version of a domain name service provider. ENS is the protocol behind the many .eth names that have popped up in the Ethereum community. Users bought .eth names as a way to own their own domains. ENS names can then be linked to your wallet address, making it easier for users to send and receive crypto (instead of having to type in a long and complex Ethereum address)…. The DAO relied on the eth.link site to provide access to information on all ENS names.

The ENS DAO already advises its users to switch to eth.limoanother community managed domain.
