5 IPS agents preselected for the DGP position

SHILLONG, December 26: The state government has shortlisted the names of five IPS officers for appointment as the next police chief general. They are Mukesh Agarwal, KV Singh Deo, L Ram Bishnoi, SN Singh and Idashisha Nongrang.
With the exception of Nongrang, all IPS officers currently serve with the Assam government.
Agarwal (lot 1989) is the DGP Special (Frontier), Deo (lot 1989) the DGP Special (Prosecution / BIEO), Bishnoi (lot 1991) the DGP Additional (T&AP) and Singh (lot 1991) the DGP Special.
Nongrang (lot 1992), the most junior officer, was recently promoted to Special DGP, Meghalaya.
A senior official said there are eight senior IPS officials from the Assam-Meghalaya framework who are eligible for appointment as DGP. He added that the state government would forward the five names to the Union Civil Service Commission.
UPSC will recommend three of these names to the state government.
A majority of senior police officers would like Nongrang to become Meghalaya’s first female DGP.
Congress chief Process T Sawkmie on Sunday urged the state government to appoint Nongrang as the next DGP. “As the most senior IPS officer in the state right now, she deserves it,” he said in a statement.
“RV Suchiang recently became the first Khasi woman to become the chief secretary of the Meghalaya. It will be equally historic if Nongrang becomes the state’s first female Khasi DGP, ”he said.
Sawkmie said the state government should give preference to a local IPS agent who is likely to better understand the situation on the ground.
He cited the example of Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga who had urged the Center to appoint a chief secretary with “working knowledge of the Mizo language” because most of his ministers do not understand Hindi or english.
Following Lalnunmawia Chuaungo’s retirement from the Gujarat cadre as chief secretary, Zoramthanga wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah asking for the appointment of additional chief secretary JC Ramthanga.
“We must take inspiration from the Mizoram government in insisting on the appointment of Nongrang to the post of DGP,” Sawkmie said.
